Overview
Sikkens Cetol BL Opaque is a high build, water-borne opaque coating with a semi-gloss, paint like finish. It covers blemishes in the wood without hiding the natural grain texture. It’s recommended for knotty softwoods or coloured timbers such as Pine, Western Red Cedar and English Oak. An environmentally friendly option due to being water-based and having a 5 year maintenance cycle which combine to reduce the environmental impact.

Preparation
Always ensure the surface to be treated is clean, dry and free from any dust, algae, fungi or moss.
- Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper.
- Degrease the surface with a lint free cloth and suitable solvent, allow to evaporate fully before applying Sikkens.
- For previously stained or worn wood use a fine sandpaper of 240 grit work in the direction of to abrade the surface the grain.
- Dust down entire surface.
- Fill any cracks, holes or chips, always use a filler designed for timber.
Application
Before applying stir the product thoroughly and test a small area to ensure colour and adhesion. Colours can vary dependant on surface to be treated.
- Do not apply when there is the risk of rain or when temperatures are below 5°C or above 30°C.
- Protect from frost and rain until dry.
- Always ensure product is fully mixed before and during application to ensure consistency in colour.
- Do not thin.
- For application use a good quality, synthetic-fibre brush.
- Apply along the grain in even strokes and avoid over brushing.
- Pay special attention to areas of exposed grain, tops and bottoms of doors and undersides of cills.
- Allow a minimum of 6 hours drying time before overcoating.
- Where appropriate (e.g. windows and doors), carefully denib the coat using a fine grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicon carbide abrasive paper.
- Remove all dust.
- Subsequent coatings should be applied as soon as possible after the previous coat has dried, but no sooner than 6 hours, in order to provide full protection.
- Additional preparation may be required if over 3 months between coats.
- Cetol BL Opaque is a two-coat system on most surfaces, however when white or pale colours are being applied over a black or dark substrate, a third coat may be necessary.
